Designer Gabriela Hearsts Brand Is An Ode To The Future Of Sustainable Fashion

The concept of sustainability has become no more than a flashy word in the world of Fashion today. Gabriela Hearst is one of the first designers to bring about a drastic change in the industry by hosting a carbon-neutral fashion show and introducing compostable bioplastics for packaging clothes.

Earlier this month, she created a collection of pieces that effortlessly invokes elegance and power with a combination of subtle feminine designs and showcased the collection at the esteemed Paris Fashion Week.

The designs were heavily inspired by her creative vision which was brought to life by using heavily embellished ivory silk with shell detailing to make the most exquisite pieces and capture the hearts of her esteemed list of customers that include global personalities like Megan Markle, Oprah and Jill Biden.

What makes this brand stand apart from the rest is the fact that the core functioning is based on having environmental friendly policies that make the world of sustainable fashion known and accessible, apart from offering quality, design and craftsmanship.

The prestigious designer has set a goal for her brand- to entirely eliminate the use of virgin materials by 2022.

It wasn’t about being the first to do things, it was about common sense. Using deadstock material was considered a dirty word. Now, environmentalism is the name of the game.”
says founder and designer, Gabriela Hearst.

In 2004, she launched her very own ready-to-wear label called Candela, with two business partners and a mere capital of $700. The business made a total revenue of $1 million at the end of the year.

Wanting to own a label that was superior in design, quality and craftsmanship, she developed her namesake label in 2015 which she calls ‘New York label with a Uruguayan Heart’.

The attendance at Paris Fashion Week was a sole decision with the intent to reduce carbon footprint of the brand.

The goal for the upcoming collection is to move away from creating work wear, since office-goers are at a minimum, but a lot more ivory slip dresses, leather 2-pieces, colorful knit dresses, fringed cashmere wraps and cotton shirt dresses, inspired by the Latin gaucho tradition.

Her brand has often been compared to European luxury labels that represents a timeless elegance spun with a sense of fun and lightheartedness while yet keeping environmental consciousness at the core.

One can find Gabriela Hearsts newest collection of sustainable designs online and in stores now.
