An introduction to Hermes
Founded by Thierry Hermès in 1837, Hermès International S.A.also known as Hermès is a
luxury goods manufacturer from France.
Hermes is especially renowned for its luxury leather goods, lifestyle accessories,
home furnishings, perfumery, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear fashion.
The famous Hermes logo that was created almost 70 years ago is of a Duc carriage with a beautiful horse. Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski is the creative director of Hermes as we write this brand story in 2021.
All of us have seen crazy rich Asians right! No one possess the amount of money they do. And the best part is, they are not subtle about it at all. Thankful to these rich Asian, the French brand Hermès saw an increase in revenue in the last quarter by 16%. Sales were extremely strong in the Asian markets such as Mainland China and Malaysia rising by over 50%. Now this is excluding japan as it is accounted by the company separately. The sales also increased due to the introduction of the fragrance unit, the Hermès Twilly perfume for women and also the clothing sector is to be given credit for. Due to its crazy expensive bags Hermès saw a decline in their sales at the beginning of the pandemic, just like everyone else.
Now let’s understand why Hermès is so extremely famous and why the sales grew considerably. Unlike other brands, Hermès provides bags that are handmade. The craftsmanship is nothing like you have seen before. The attention to details and the carefully dyed skin of the bag is what makes it so expensive. To top it off, the brand uses skin of real cow, crocodile, lizard and luxurious ostriches who are very well bred. Now feeding and taking care of animals is already costly, and so is the processing their skin to be used otherwise. They are finally accentuated with wide range of colors and featured with gold and palladium hardware that finishes the look of the brand. When you hear the brand Hermès, you automatically think of all the Birkin bags. But there are more to the collection then just Birkin or Kelly. While these are the highest form of luxury, Hermès has various other collections under its wings that are stunning in their own way ranging from $9,000 to $150,000.
Victoria Beckham has a collection of over 100 Birkins worth $2 million. The largest collector of Birkin in the world currently is a Singaporean socialite Jamie Chua who has over 200 Birkins. She also houses the most expensive bag ever sold; the white crocodile Hermès Himalaya encrusted with 10.23 carats of diamonds realised for $ 300,168.
Other known owners of the Himalayan Birkin include Victoria Beckham, Nita Ambani, Kim Kardashian and Heart Evangelista. Now if that doesn’t convince you of Birkin’s worth, this probably might. Consider Birkin equivalent to a property you buy, or even gold. It’s an investment. Unlike other handbags, Birkin resale value is more than triple of what you bought it for, and you can flaunt it as well. If that’s not a winner reason to buy Birkin I don’t know what is.
Squaring back to numbers and comparisons, LVMH has shown an accelerated sales percentage in recent months. While its competitors, Kering who owns divisions such as Gucci and Saint Laurent reported a 17% drop in sales. Now a strengthening Euro is also an income from tourists coming on shopping trips from around the world.
When Hermès became the first company to start online retail in 2000s it dominated that market segment. It still does but buying a Birkin is not so easy. There is months of wait- lists and you always want what you cannot have. Hermès is reportedly hiring more staff for its leather workshop to meet the demands and has reopened its online portal in the west while Europe still sees nothing of that sort.
