Lakme Fashion Week has been bustling with art and glamour and designer, Payal Khandwala has been adding the cherry on the top with her exclusive limited-edition collection of Jamdani saris this Lakme Fashion Week.
Payal awed the crowd at the All About India show which focuses on the importance of artisans and the crafts of India. Known for their handwoven in silk, these Jamdani saris explored the depths of a craft which is generally woven in fine muslin on handlooms.
The theme behind the collection was to reinvent a skill in such a manner that it looks completely new. This was put to such efforts that not only are the saris woven in the designers signature colour-blocked silks, the scale of the traditional motifs which are typically smaller, either floral or geometric, was redesigned as an extension of our more modern wildflower print story, to be both exaggerated and graphic.
The whole process has been a meticulous one with a lot of careful intimate detailing. To create this beautiful piece, two-inch strips of the pattern are laid underneath the loom. Thousands of dots in watercolour, are inked on the woven warp to recreate the pattern on the yarn itself.
The weft is then woven with a wooden shuttle, as the artisan arduously uses the marked guidelines to weave the pattern along with the silver metallic yarn, using a separate metallic needle.
You’ll witness utter beauty and luxury when you put on this six yards of sheer elegance. After the long traditional process, you’ll find a textile which is contemporary as well as elegant.
You can find the series of handwoven jamdani saris exclusively at Kala Ghoda flagship store.
It is limited to just 10 saris one in each colour.
